Architecture reflects neighborhoods' past, present and future

Like many neighborhoods enjoying a residential renaissance, the South and West Loops have their share of new-construction developments. But through their use of architecture, four new developments in particular are helping reshape the landscape of the South and West Loops - whether giving a nod to a neighborhood's history of pushing the envelope in modern design...

...While the West Loop neighborhood has emerged from an industrial warehouse district, the South Loop's architectural transformation has sprouted from one-time printing houses in Printers Row and the stately homes of the Prairie Avenue District. The area's rebirth brings a new chapter in residential design...

...A sleek design is also center stage at 1555 Wabash, a 14-story condominium building by New West Realty. Located at the corner of Wabash and 16th Street, the building features a glass and steel facade with landscaped terraces, design by Jonathan Splitt Architects.

"With 1555 Wabash, we wanted to bring buyers a building that takes a forward approach to design," said Ted Mazola, president of New West Realty. "Many of today's buyers in the South Loop are progressive and want that reflected not only in the interior style of their homes, but also in their choice of building.

According to the architect, the design reflects both an influence from the international contemporary design movement of the 20th century and attention to energy efficiency. The low-E glass is greenish-blue, giving the building an airy quality, while the sleek lines reflect the cutting-edge style. The open floor plans and oversized windows give the homes an expansive feeling with clean sight lines.

1555 Wabash offers 176 condominiums ranging in size from 767 to 1,376 square feet. Residences have one to two bedrooms, one to two baths, and a balcony or terrace. Currently in pre-construction sales, the residences are priced from the low $300,000s to the low $600,000s.
